AI Search Visibility: How to Assess Your Brand in AI Answers

A repeatable method to check how AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot mention and cite your brand, and its limits.

What "AI search visibility" means

More buyers now get answers from AI systems before they visit a website, through Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot. Visibility here means two things: whether the answer mentions your brand, and whether it cites your pages as a source. This guide sets out a repeatable way to check both. It describes a method, not industry findings. We don't publish visibility statistics without a dataset we can document.

Step 1: Build a prompt set

Write the questions real buyers ask, grouped by intent:

  • Category questions: "best B2B SEO agency for manufacturers"
  • Problem questions: "why are my Google Ads leads poor quality"
  • Comparison questions: "agency vs in-house marketing for a small firm"
  • Brand questions: "what does [your company] do", "is [your company] reliable"

Aim for a manageable, fixed set, so results can be compared from month to month. Include local versions if you serve particular cities or countries.

Step 2: Choose the engines and conditions

Record which systems you test, and how: logged out or logged in, which country, which device and which model or mode where you can see it. Answers change with all of these, so write them down every time.

Step 3: Record each answer consistently

For every prompt and engine, note:

  • Whether your brand is mentioned, and how it's described
  • Whether your site is cited or linked, and which page
  • Which competitors are mentioned or cited
  • Which third-party sources are cited, such as directories, reviews, media or forums
  • The date

A simple spreadsheet is enough. Screenshots help when answers change later.

Step 4: Repeat and compare

Run the same prompts more than once. AI answers vary between runs, so a single check is a snapshot, not a measurement. Look for patterns across repeats and over months rather than reacting to one answer.

Step 5: Find out why you are or aren't cited

Compare cited pages with your own. Common differences include clear, direct answers near the top of the page; accurate structured data; consistent business details across the web; and coverage on the third-party sites the engines already trust. See SEO, AEO and GEO explained and schema for B2B sites.

Honest limitations

  • Results are personalised and change over time, so no one sees "the" answer
  • Most AI tools don't report impressions to site owners, so traffic data is incomplete
  • Being cited doesn't guarantee a click or an enquiry
  • Nobody can guarantee inclusion in AI answers, and you should be wary of anyone who claims they can
