SEO vs AEO and GEO
SEO, AEO and GEO overlap. Technical indexability, useful content, entity clarity, original evidence and trusted external recognition support all three; answer and citation monitoring add a specific AI-search measurement layer.
Build one useful source of truth, then structure and measure it across discovery experiences.
What SEO owns
Crawlability, indexability, intent matching, commercial and informational architecture, internal links and search performance.
What AEO adds
Clear question-and-answer structures, concise definitions, lists or tables where useful and strong supporting context.
What GEO adds
Evidence and entity review across sources plus repeatable observations of citations, destinations, factual accuracy and referral behavior.
Separate the work from the terminology
AEO and GEO are useful planning labels only when they describe a concrete task. Ask a supplier to show which page, answer, source or measurement will change. The following comparison describes a working approach, not three mutually exclusive products or a promise of placement.
| Buyer question | Shared foundation | Answer-focused work | Generative-search observation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can the service page be found? | Check access, indexing, navigation and intent ownership. | Make the service definition understandable without a sales introduction. | Check whether observed answers point to the correct service page rather than an unrelated URL. |
| What does the business actually offer? | Keep service scope, location and contact information consistent. | State inclusions, exclusions and who the service suits. | Record incorrect descriptions or unsupported claims and identify the source that needs correction. |
| Which option fits this situation? | Create one useful comparison for one decision. | Use criteria, exceptions and a readable comparison table. | Observe whether cited passages preserve the original tradeoffs and limitations. |
| Why should someone trust the answer? | Use identifiable authors, appropriate sources and supportable claims. | Place the evidence beside the answer it supports. | Distinguish an unlinked brand mention from a citation to an identifiable source. |
| Did visibility help the business? | Define useful visits and qualified conversions. | Check whether readers can continue from the answer to a relevant next step. | Report observations and identifiable referrals separately; do not turn a small prompt sample into market share. |
Keep an observation log that another person can repeat
Start from questions heard in sales conversations or support requests. Record the exact prompt, system used, date, language, location assumptions, account or browsing context and the cited URL. Save the answer with its limitations. Repeating the same observation later can reveal a change, but it does not prove that a particular edit caused it.
- Use a stable set of buyer questions alongside separately labelled exploratory prompts.
- Classify each observation as a linked citation, an unlinked mention, an inaccurate description or no observed appearance.
- Open the cited page and verify that it supports the statement rather than merely sharing a keyword.
- Record referral and conversion evidence only when the available analytics supports that connection.
Keep Google-specific requirements in their proper scope
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says existing SEO fundamentals still apply and there are no extra technical requirements or special structured-data types needed. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. This is Google-specific guidance, not a universal specification for every AI product, and meeting it does not guarantee inclusion.

Questions this page answers
Should separate SEO and GEO pages target the same intent?
No. Give each page a distinct owner question and connect them. Avoid duplicating commercial claims under new terminology.
Is FAQ schema required for AEO?
No. Visible FAQs can help readers and passage extraction, but Google discontinued the FAQ rich-result feature in May 2026. FAQ markup is not a Google visibility tactic and never guarantees answer visibility.
Can conventional SEO be skipped?
No reliable generative-search strategy should ignore indexability, page quality, intent and evidence.
